Music Video Evaluation

What were your goals?

The goal of this task was to create an entirely different music video for a song than the original. My partner and I chose Someone Like You by Adele, which was originally a impressionist styled as in the original video, it shows Adele walking in an abandoned location, lip-syncing the lyrics of the song and showing emotion. In our version of the music video, we decided to change the style from impressionist to narrative. We achieved this by showing a flashback of our main character with their ex, showing how they once were and then showing how different the situation between them is now by showing her ex with another woman, which reflects the lyrics in the song. Because of this we can say the video is also lyric interpretation style because the visuals reflect what is being sang in the song.

Did you meet your goals?

Although we only used a short section from the song I feel that we met our goals as our audience could clearly see a narrative within the music video. From the feedback, we were told that the use of black and white (which symbolised the footage supposedly being a flashback/memory) in one of the lines shows them that the main character in our video was thinking back to a better time and the colour parts of the video were the present. Because of this, I feel we met our goals in making a narrative styled music video which differed from the original.

What was your role?

My roles in the preparation and production of the music video was mainly being the director (filming, directing actor/actress etc.) and editing the video. For directing, I had to position the actor in the right place so the light balance was right, tell her what to do while also making sure that the camera angle was right for the part of the video I needed to film. In the editing stage I changed the speed of the video,  cut unusual pieces out and added transitions so the video flowed better. I also gave ideas which contributed to the narrative that we saw in the music video, such as showing the character lip syncing and also looking at her ex with a new partner.
